alternative route around south of Kolokithas

Hi there,

There is an alternative route from the west saddle of Kolokithas valley to Livada that circumvents the Mitato, south of it.
Walked it twice in 2009 and 2012.
Actually found some cairns and very faded red dots on the route. Was harder than the regular route, but doable.
Can post a gps track if I find out how to do upload this here.

There must also be a shortcut directly to Mitato Pirru and Potamos valley, but I was too tired to try.

Kind regards,
Johannes

Hi Johannes,

it would be very interesting to find out more about this area. We can then discuss the "pathes" out there!
You can easily post GPS tracks - just use the sub-menu "Dateianhang hochladen" below and then add the file.

Best wishes
Simon

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the welcome here!

Please find a gps file and a google earth screen capture enclosed.
Hope this makes sense.

This route requires a good balance as there are some narrow ridges to be crossed.
in May 2012 it was very hard because of the snowdrifts.

The area around kolokithas is very nice IMO.
Have been there 10 times or so ...

Hi Johannes,

yes, Kolokithas area is really nice. You did the same ascent as me from Kakoperato mitato at the end of the road. There is also a different and less steep route leading up from there but I did not explore it yet.
We both passed by at Tria Matia and then you explored the southern area. I have never done this but it certainly makes sense. Nevertheless I think the best route to cross the doline valley leading southward to Pirou is the "bridge of land" close to Kolokithas and then round the conical hill. At the ruin of Vasiliki mitato, both routes merge again.
It is correct: Kolokithas is one of the nicest areas in the mountain range!

Best wishes
Simon

Hi Simon,

The shepherds at kokoperato mitato have always been very kind to me over the years. They gave me company, a bed, raki, food etc.

The climb I did directly up from there is very step but not difficult.
Only in 2012 did I manage to complete the 'official' route from Selia over kapsekas etc. which is actually much less steep but requires good orientation
Based on Lorraine Wilsons book I expected some red dots, cairns, but didn't find any. One really has to read the landscape and the contours there.

Where exactly is Vasiliki mitato ? I am sure I have seen it but cannot name it.
I think your description to Pirrou makes sense but I have not done it yet.
In 2009 I climbed the Tzelias mountain (between E4 and Kolokithas) and the area around it and looked at the most obvious passages from above.
Must study my photo's again.
Next time I spend time at Katsiveli or Livida, I will make some day-tours to investigate further.
however the area north of Pirou is 'badlands' and hard to negotiate.

Kind regards
Johannes

Hi Johannes,

in 2012, we did the "official" route described by L. Wilson from Therisso to Kolokithas. It is, by the way, now shown in the Anavasi map.
There were very, very few cairns and we did not find any dots. Nevertheless, we the careful preparation by satellite photographs (Google Earth), the route can be located quite easily. It is one of the nicest walks in the area.
I do not know the Omalos - Zourva - Therissos route and would be glad to receive more information on that. I have an idea but would like to see if this fits with the real route.
I haven't got a map of the area here; therefore I cannot comment on the Tzelias mountain.... But it sounds very interesting.

Best wishes
Simon

Simon,
You did it exactly as I did in late may 2012.
I had figured out the 'official' route over the past years by trial & error & google earth bust was missing just 500 m along Kapsekas.
I finally closed that in 2012 :D
Didn't descend to the spring there though, but passed just above it.
There are indeed a few cairns from there onward.

Kind regards
Johannes

Hi

Thank you for your gps route south of Kolokithas. Would you mind giving your experience of the Selia, kapsekas and livada water sources along this trail, thank you.

Max

Hello Max,

I have walked this route. What exactely would you like to know about these springs?
Lagounero (about 1h from Livadha, sometimes connected to the mitato by a pipe): Reliable water source in normal years.
Kapsekas: Maybe dry in summer. May not be very easy to locate without the track.
Selia: Should be reliable. Mitato nearby. Fantastic views.

Best wishes
Simon
