current snow level in the Levka Ori

Hello,

Me and two friends are doing a trek in the Levka Ori in the week of 16-23 may. Because our plan is to descend to Agios Ioannis on the Zaranokefala path, i would like to know what the current amount of snow is there. I've read somewhere on this forum that the snow level is significantly less in respect to the last few years? Does this mean the Zaranokefala path is walkable this year mid may? Thanks for you help.

Seba

Hello and Welcome to this board!

Indeed in 2018 the snow level is significantly lower than in average years.
Having been there until 20.04. I saw no snow patches around Zaranokefala.
So my guess is there will be no problems with snow in your time.
Maybe Simon will have more news when he returns next week from Crete.
Best wishes

Michael

Hi Red,

When I walked it I started from Poria and it took me 11 and a half hours. The walk from Kallergi to Poria takes about an hour, as I recall.

So a long day but well worth it. Also, I used 3 litres of water - I started with 2 litres & topped up at Zaranokefala spring.

Have a good one.

Ian.

Yassou Red,

I walked this route last May in one day. It took me a bit less than Ian, but no one can say, how fast you are ;). My times are:
Kallergi - Melindaou (via E4) 2 1/2 h
Melindaou - Potamos Mitato 2h
Potamos Mitato - Zarani Spring 2 1/2 h
Zarani - Ioannis 2 1/2 h
So my pure walking time (!) was about 9 1/2 hours. I was in a good condition on that day (and even than it was hard, personally I hate the last ravine from Kroussia to Ioannis!). There are many nice places to rest on that way. You can probably fill up your water on the lower Potamos Mitato (water tap). Save and brilliant water at Zarani Spring.

Hi Red
I did it with an overnight stop on Zarni. Times much the same as Dennis apart from the journey down which took much longer - I made the mistake of opting for the road instead of the ravine, don't know just how bad the ravine is but it must be a better option than the road - almost gave up the will to live coming down that road !

Brian,

Yes, a nightover in Zarani is on my list. Must be amazing. At Kroussia my advice is: Take the marked (green/white) ravine from Kroussia down to Ioannis! It is definitely shorter than the road. But after this long way it is rough, and thats why I dont like it. But (!) an evening in Alonia after a long walk is well worth it ;)

Hi everybody,

we walked the E4 from Xyloskalo to Askifou: There were just two small patches of snow (ca. 2 - 5 m wide) left on the northern slope of Grias Soros. This was about two weeks ago. According to that I would assume that the patch of snow on the Agios Ioannis path will definitely have melted by now. If it is still there, it is either not wide or can be surrounded. The summer will become very dry!!

Best wishes

Thank you guys for all the infos.

The bus time table changed now. Bus from Chania to Sougia with drop-off at the Omalos junction now starts later at 4 pm instead of 2. So, if you are not lucky to get a lift it seems to be rather impossible to be up at Kallergi before night falls. Any suggestions?

7.45am Chania to Omalos - this is the 'Samaria Gorge' bus so gets pretty full depending on the season. It's a 90 minute journey so 9.15 before you get to Omalos, so if you have a coffee and a break before you set off for Kallergi you won't get there much before mid day, time to relax before the walking begins :)

Where did you get this information from? The Sougia bus leaves Chania at 13:45 according to my information. This would suit you well.

Best wishes

I checked here, they changed the table on 05.05.18.

With 2 pm departure would be fine!
