According to this statement: I do not see that you want to discuss – you have your opinion which you consider as the only acceptable and the only correct one. Katsiveli-E4 to Niato-new(?)version south of Kastro, mavri l

Simon

Planning to use the old E4 route for the initial part of a Kastro ascent in May.
Can anyone confirm if the old E4 poles/markings are still there please?
Many thanks,
Jon

Moin and Kalimera Jon, I hiked up from Niato to Kastro on May 24, 2019. Shortly before Kastromeno at the two cisterns, it goes up on the left. (The new marked E4 route begins shortly thereafter) It is marked with the typical E4 symbol sign. The first short piece, which is still covered with Maccia, there are color dots on the stones as a mark. Then you cross a rocky valley / valley and then it goes steeply uphill on a narrow degree towards Kastro and Koutala Seli. Here are the typical E4 poles in a few hundred meters. You always have to see where the next E4 pole is. In the valley / valley and during the further ascent, many of the bars are bent in the middle. As if a giant bent the bars out of anger.

The top of the grade is super quiet and you have a beautiful view of the Kastro, Kastromeno and Kako Kastelli. The Neue E4-Weg runs under one. The condition there looks very interesting and unusual.

As beautiful and lonely as it is up there, on the other hand it is a little monotonous. The ascent on the degree just never ends. You think you did it straight away, then there is an E4 pole again. It always goes on like this. Shortly before the branch to the Kastro, I turned back.

I got a good sunburn on the hike (in the neck, back of the knee and calves), although I was already well tanned. The wind, the blazing sun and the reflected snow fields should not be underestimated. So apply cream.

Also fett eincremen.

Thanks for the confirmation Simon and KV,
I like to think my route finding can follow the logical lay of the land, but some markers are more comforting :)

And a good reminder about sunblock ... I don't usually take any (from a gram counting/ultralight leaning), but this'll be my first full day there and my tan will have faded a lot over a british winter :)

So, now just fingers crossed for no travel restrictions stopping me getting there!

Cheers,
Jon

Kalimera Jon,
as I said before, I was also well tanned, I only put a little cream on my face for the hike. There is no shadow during the entire hike, especially on the degree you are totally exposed to the sun, plus the snow fields that reflect. Due to the light, pleasant wind, you don't notice the sun's rays, which is very treacherous. This combination of sun, no shade, snow fields and light wind is very dangerous.

Headgear and creaming is very important.

All the best for the hike. I am also on the island in May and hope that the flight will not be canceled.

Best wishes, kv
